Football Welcomes Refugees

As part of the Football Welcomes Refugees campaign, the Spireites gave away a number of free tickets to locally based refugees for the last five matches of the season at the Technique Stadium.

The Football Welcomes programme, organised by Amnesty International, celebrates the contribution players with a refugee background make to the beautiful game, and the positive role football can play in bringing people together and creating more welcoming communities.

The biggest group attending were from Ukrainians staying with local families but there were also refugees displaced by the conflict in Syria as well as some from Afghanistan.

Ollie Pardo from the North Derbyshire Refugees Support Group said: “It is great that the club has built a relationship with local refugees. It is things like this that can make a real difference to their day-to-day lives.”
