Fitness challenge in the HUB

On Sunday, September 11, starting at 10am, the Community Trust are hosting the Spireites Fitness Challenge in the gym at the HUB at the Technique Stadium.

The challenge will be open to all age groups and consist of four activities – a 30-second row, benchpress reps in 30 seconds and 30 seconds of sit-ups and jumpovers.

Speaking to 1866 Sport, organiser Lud Ramsey, who is a personal trainer, said: “It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about having a go and challenging yourself. We want to see these people improve.

“We want to do something for charity. There’s a lot of charities we want to try and put this forward to.

“We also want to see people get a goal because you can do fitness, you can do training but you need to have goals to challenge yourself and to see that you are improving.”

Lud has taken part in some of the toughest running events as well as certain TV fitness/endurance shows.

He said: “I’ve been running competitively now for 50 years and I’ve done all types of challenges over the years.

“I’ve run every race from 100m to a marathon but then also I’ve done Gladiators and Ninja Warrior.

“I’ve challenged myself and I’ve always continued to challenge myself because without that motivation and goals, it’s hard to keep training.”

The reps will be counted throughout the challenge and added up for a final score – a good score for men is around 300 and for women is over 250. Prizes will be given to anyone who reaches their respective milestone.

The former Ninja Warrior contestant believes that it could also be a good opportunity for young footballers to give it a go to help with fitness.

He also mentioned how Spireites right-back Jeff King has had a crack at the challenge, saying: “We’ll be looking forward to it. It will be a good opportunity for some of the youngsters to come through and see what they actually need to be able to do to be a good footballer.

“You need to have all-round fitness. It’s not just about playing games – you’ve got to be fit if you’re playing 90 minutes.

“Jeff King posted his scores. He achieved 185 on the row, on the benchpress he did 75 reps in 30 seconds, he did 24 sit-ups and jumpovers he managed 59.

“That was after doing a heavy training session so he might have done better than that. But that is a very good score.”

It costs £10 to enter the challenge with the money going towards charities and £100 will be given to the winners of the men’s and women’s categories.
