Chesterfield FC Community Trust launched its Walking Football programme in July 2011. Walking Football was part of the Extra Time Initiative aimed at people predominantly aged 50 years and over. It was hoped that the programme would complement other physical activities for people aged 50 years plus in the local area and would be particularly attractive for men.
Since the start of the project, participants have not only had lots of fun playing walking football but have also seen a range of health benefits and re-discovered skills they thought they had seen the back of. Most of the participants never thought that they would play football again and are loving having a second chance to play!
Since Chesterfield launched their project the media interest in the new sport has attracted a lot of attention and a number of new Walking Football projects have sprung up across the nation – it all started in Chesterfield!
