Walking football challenge match between men and women

The first challenge match between the Senior Spireites men’s team and the Spirettes women’s walking football team was held at the Dronfield Akademy recently.

The game was played in a competitive but friendly spirit and the overall event was very enjoyable. The two teams played four x 15-minute sessions which the men’s team eventually won 5-1. The match was closer than the end score suggests with one of the quarters being 0-0.

For the men’s team there were goals from Alan Reynolds, John Dacey and Jeff Evans. Norman Green made several good saves to restrict the Spirettes to a single goal. Dee-Ann Lewis scored for the women’s team and there were some excellent saves from Tricia Borrell.

After the match, Cara Doxey of the Spirettes said: “The match was fabulous! Very supportive atmosphere and lots of positive advice and encouragement from the referee. Huge effort from both sides – competitive and fun.”

Donna Fowles added:  “I thought the men were very welcoming to us ladies and played the game in the way it was meant to be. The ref was very fair and looked after everyone well. I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to the next one.”

It is hoped that this will become a regular fixture with the next one to be held in January 2024.
