Last Monday, 20th November, Show Racism the Red Card held an event in the SBK Computers Lounge at the Proact Stadium. The event was to raise awareness to over 200 students from our numerous partner schools about the damage that racism can have on people.

Campaign worker Ben Holman, from SRtRC, introduced the Year 5 and 6 students to the afternoon’s first activity. This workshop allowed the students to look at stereotyping and why it is wrong to judge people straight away just based on their skin colour or ethnicity. The youngsters would partake in a thought provoking and eye-opening discussion on the matter.

The next activity that the young people would embark on is a Q&A with a star-studded panel. The panel included first team players Joe Rowley and Connor Dimaio and former Spireite players Ritchie Humphreys and Jason Lee. The panel was rounded off with Chesterfield Ladies Manager and Activities Officer at the Trust, Steph O’Brien. The pupils were well prepared and asked some great questions. How do you deal with racism? Have you ever experienced racism? And how can we stop racism? These were just a few examples of the great questions asked with he best even getting a prize. Ian Evatt also attended the event as the Community Trust ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card, he said “This has been a fantastic occasion where children have learned the importance of the Show Racism the Red Card message”

The final activities of the afternoon saw the pupils look to get autographs fro our panelists and Chester the Field Mouse. The students then received a free match ticket to the match against Barnet on the 9th December.

We would like to thank Show Racism the Red Card for putting on a brilliant event for the pupils and also the panelists for answering the hard-hitting questions that the students asked. Finally we would like to thank the pupils from our partner schools for their interest in the topic and for everyone taking part.
