Academy golf day

A golf day at Chesterfield Golf Club on Monday, July 11, has been organised to raise funds for the Chesterfield FC Junior & Youth Academy.

Teams of four are invited to take part and there are opportunities to play alongside a European Tour golfer.

Academy manager Neil Cluxton explained: “It’s been organised by one of the parents of one of our players who is a well-known golfer called Robert Rock.

“He’s been with us about 12 months now and he approached us and said that he would love to get involved in raising a bit of money for the academy and get everybody together for a social occasion.

“He has kindly given his time up for the full day and we are looking to get as many teams and individual players there as we can. Robert will be there to speak to every team at the start.

“He will be there floating around the course all day. We’ll have a bit of a drink and a catch up afterwards and there will be some prizes to be given out.”

Rock turned professional in 1998 and started playing on the European Tour in 2003. He won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship in 2012, beating both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to the honour. He also reached his highest ranking of 55th following the victory.

Cluxton thanked Rock for giving up his time to help out with the event, saying: “He’s a really nice bloke, down to earth and very humble. He’s just a really great chap and to give a full day of his time up is great for us.

“He likes what we are doing at the club. His son is enjoying playing, training with us and developing with us. We are very appreciative of his time.”

The cost for the day is £180 per four-person team. Individuals can also register and team up with other attendees.

Cluxton said: “I’ve had a few enquiries from individuals that can’t get a team of four together, but if any individuals want to play then I’m sure we can put them together.

“I’m sure we will have a great day. If there are a few non-golfers or limited golfers like myself who just want to attend the event, they are more than welcome.”

A bacon roll and coffee will be provided on arrival. The format is the best two scores from four on each hole.
