Spireites raise funds for relief efforts in Ukraine

Collections at the Maidenhead United match and the recent academy game at Matlock Town raised around £1,000 for relief efforts in Ukraine. This was supplemented by some Spire Lotto winners, meaning £1,200 has been sent to the EFDN Foundation.

The European Football Development Network is supporting humanitarian work by Shakhtar Donetsk in Lviv. This campaign is facilitated by Legia Warsaw in Poland, where their stadium has become a distribution centre for much needed supplies.

In the Lviv Arena, Shakhtar are providing relief, including food, water and medicine to those passing through. The refugees, including many children, have left their hometowns across Ukraine, carrying only bare essentials.

Justin Tellus, head of academy recruitment, helped organise the collection at Matlock. Justin said: “It is interesting that the money is going to Shakthar Donetsk as I was sent-off there in a Europa League match in 1998!

“Regardless of that, it is great to see the football family pulling Spireites together to help those affected by this terrible invasion.”
