The Premier League Reading Stars programme has started at New Whittington Primary School and the school’s head teacher, Miss Tooley, was delighted with the response following the first session.
“The children are already enthused by this and we can’t wait to see the results of this fantastic, football-fuelled, reading project,” she said.
Alyss Hearnshaw, who is a Premier League Reading Stars coach for the Trust, said: “This is the second group we have taught using the new booklets we put together.
“We’ve put a ‘Spireites spin’ on the resources, which the groups seem to have loved!
“The pupils have been really engaged in the sessions and by the end of the six weeks I am confident we will see a positive difference in attitudes towards the importance of reading.”
The aim of the six-week programme is to stimulate literacy engagement in children aged 9-13 years who love football but lack motivation in reading.
Evaluation has shown that the programme can have a significant impact on attainment and attitude.
